("In Harm's Way" is the second Star Trek: New Voyages episode. This week I spoil the story.)

A through-the-bridge-top view of Pike's Enterprise reveals a losing fight to a Doomsday Machine. They attempt a saucer separation but gets blasted anyway, bodies flying out of the wreckage. The main story begins with a long tracking shot overlaid by historic radio voices and the eerie whistling of Planet Gateway. Starfleet is studying the Guardian of Forever as Project Timepiece. Farragut Captain Kirk and Klingon First Officer Kargh respond to a Priority One call from Project Timepiece at the request of an unknown Vulcan, Spock. Spock informs them the "Natural Course of Time" has been altered; the DM they encountered reentered time fourteen years prior to destroy Pike's Enterprise and start replicating. Since then a war against them has changed the face of the Federation and Kirk must help reset things.

First a quick time trip is in order to gather more information. They follow an antiproton trail back to the 1960's but 2006 better suits the antiprotons. Hot Barbara Luna answers the door, recognizes the landing party as if expecting them, then shows them a VHS tape made in 2004. William Windom! tells of a strange temporal toss-back and Decker's jaunt to earth. For them he left some up-close DM data, his duds lovingly "To Will," and the shuttlecraft parked in his garage.

The landing party returns to Kargh's technobabble about chronitons (a "quantum particle of time"). After examining the loss of Pike's ship from sensor drone video Kirk decides to attack the first DM alongside Pike. Dr. MacGregor shows them a giant-sized Guardian. Spock encourages Kirk by mind-melding about Talos: "this one memory I share." DeSalle gestures his confidence that he can pilot Farragut through the device and they zip through.

Pike is a hard-sell on the whole deal, especially when they find a Klingon cruiser fighting the DM with Malachi Throne at the helm. He gets chewed up and Kargh salutes. Pike uses a confusing maneuver to IED the DM, and the combined attack compels the DM to time-jump forward. Now Fleet Captain Pike aboard training vessel Daedalus rejoins the attack, and welcomes not one Kirk but two: "future" Admiral Kirk also. They destroy the DM but Captain Spock cannot restrain Pike from a dip in the Delta Rays pool. Ambassador Spock comes to Chairbound Pike at Starbase 11 to inspire him to face life. Their maze of time trails exhausted, Kirk and Spock meet Pike on "time's natural course."
